The Public Safety Department’s mission is to work in partnership with the West Chester University community to provide a safe and secure learning, living and working environment. The Dispatch Center fields about 20,000 phone calls for assistance annually. Additionally, communications personnel are responsible for coordinating supplementary external emergency response such as fire and emergency medical services. The Communications Center is staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year regardless of semester breaks and holidays. The Security Officer Dispatcher is responsible for police, security, and maintenance dispatch duties in the Dispatch Center.

The selected candidate must be able to obtain CLEAN (Commonwealth Law Enforcement Assistance Network), JNET(PA Justine Network) and CJIS (Criminal Justice Information Services) certifications and successfully complete background checks.

This position is deemed "essential" and must remain or report to work during partial or full day closings of the University due to hazardous road conditions, emergency circumstances or for other reasons. The ability to work overtime when needed is also required.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Answering both emergency and non-emergency phone calls; transferring calls to the appropriate department
  • Providing information on university events, policies, and procedures
  • Monitoring and directing radio traffic of police, security, maintenance, and EMS units
  • Operating the CLEAN/SCOPE terminal
  • Running vehicle and operator checks for Patrol Officers
  • Entering NCIC transactions for criminal incidents
  • Monitoring alarm systems and dispatching proper responders; monitoring closed circuit camera system
  • Using appropriate problem-solving techniques with walk in emergency and non-emergency customers provides a positive outlook to the department
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • GED or high school diploma
  • Must have a clean criminal record
  • Ability to use computers and electronic handheld devices

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of common traffic safety rules
  • Knowledge of common building safety practices
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions
  • Ability to learn basic methods and techniques of traffic control and criminal investigation
  • Ability to work long hours alone under varying climatic conditions
  • Ability to remain alert at all times and to act quickly and calmly in emergencies
  • Ability to deal firmly but tactfully with patients, students, employees, and the general public

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in security or law enforcement

Salary and benefits are dictated by the PASSHE Officers Association (POA) collective bargaining agreement.
