UPMC Corporate is hiring a Communications Specialist II to join our Public Relations department as part of the Internal Communications team and support our employee news processes and communication projects for clinical care teams.This is a hybrid role at the U.S. Steel Tower in downtown Pittsburgh with three in-office days a week (flexible M-R).

Note: UPMC Internal Communications facilitates staff-facing communications; this is not a marketing, media relations, or external public relations position that oversees public-facing communications.

This positions focus is two-fold: driving the internal news channels that serve as UPMC Internal Communications primary push communications to our 96,000 employees and supporting communication projects for clinical care teams (physicians, nurses, and advanced practice providers). The Communications Specialist II will be responsible for contributing to all aspects of creating our digital news products, with a focus on editing copy for style, clarity, and content and also managing, editing, and building newsletters and news content using our email and intranet platforms. In collaboration with other members of the team, this role will include managing the departments editorial calendar, contributing to overall departmental news strategy, and leading efforts to provide timely reporting on news channel analytics and audience engagement data. This team member will also work closely with other members of the UPMC Internal Communications team to support various communications projects for internal clients, including writing, editing, design, client management, project tracking and more, with an emphasis on change communications supporting clinical care delivery.

The preferred candidate will have demonstrated writing and editing skills, keen news judgement, superb attention to detail, adept problem-solving ability, and experience in a fast-moving work environment and be willing to regularly seek ways to improve and innovate projects and processes to better engage key audiences. Experience in a health care setting or working with physicians is beneficial but not required.


Responsibilities:

  • Take key role in editing, building, and sending push communications to systemwide internal audiences.
  • Serve as a communications counselor/consultant to internal UPMC clients, particularly within the Physician Services Division, and prepare strategies to achieve communication goals.
  • Contribute to departmental news processes, including troubleshooting issues, training departmental peers, and overseeing the departmental editorial calendar.
  • Partner with UPMC content experts and project managers to create communications tactics tailored to physicians and use a variety of internal channels to inform providers about timely initiatives, priorities, and opportunities.
  • Collaborate with those inside and outside the department to complete to deadline assigned projects and deploy communications tactics.
  • Maintain overall editorial excellence for news channels through attention to detail, sharp editing, and ability to enforce style guidelines.
  • Develop and deliver analytics reports on the effectiveness of digital news products.
  • Continuously refine and maintain the processes used by the department to reach internal audiences.
  • Handle multiple tasks simultaneously and prioritize projects appropriately.
  • Demonstrate service-oriented behavior in interactions with clients and co-workers.
  • Adhere to all department processes as established for editing content, submitting to publications, supporting intranet governance, and other processes as outlined by department leadership.

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, public relations, communications, marketing, English, health sciences, or a related field required.
  • Minimum of one year experience in communications or related field required.
  • Demonstrated writing and communication skills required, including excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills required; knowledge of AP style preferred.
  • Effective planning, multitasking, interpersonal, and organizational skills, plus ability to work under tight deadlines, adapt to challenges, solve problems, and do so with attention to detail and sound judgement.
  • Experience in project management, internal communications, news media, or professional communication experience in a corporate or health care setting is a plus.
  • Familiarity with editorial news processes, data analytics, or experience with digital platforms Poppulo, LumApps, or SharePoint a plus.
