POSITION
SUMMARY:
The Database Administrator I (DBA I) is responsible for supporting the
mission critical production, test, and development applications and
environments used by the campus community.
The Database Administrator I will be responsible for multiple aspects of
database management and application support for central computing at Duquesne
University. Responsibilities include
software installation, patch and upgrade administration, application setup and
configuration, database and application server support, vendor technical
support, technology life cycle management, backup and recovery,
troubleshooting, and server security, audit, and operations monitoring.
The DBA I will report to the Associate Director of Administrative
Applications and will also collaborate with the Database Administration Team in
planning efforts and the development of standards, project plans, policies, and
procedures. Duties are performed on a
variety of operating systems with a primary focus on RHEL and Windows. The nature of this position will require the
individual to occasionally work evenings and weekends.
DUTIES
AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Conducts fundamental Oracle
Database Administration tasks, including database creation and maintenance,
tuning, backup and recovery, program migrations, and security implementation
and audit. Supports and enforces
security procedures and best practices.
Identifies and documents available patches and upgrades for all supported
products, including the campus ERP platform. Monitors vendor product communication channels and product roadmaps to
identify new technologies, release dates, requirements, and support timelines.
Displays basic familiarity with application server technology such as
Apache Tomcat. Able to stop and start critical processes and deploy
applications and patches to support the computing environment.
Works with the Database Administration Team to plan and implement upgrades
and patches in support of the Ellucian ERP and Oracle environments, as well as
other team supported assets. Observes
and participates as appropriate in all DBA team planning efforts and to the
development of standards, project plans, policies, and procedures.
Enters
service requests with Oracle, Ellucian, and other vendors and responds to
vendor technical support feedback with the support of other DBA team members.
Performs administrative
tasks / other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS:
Minimum qualifications:
The successful candidate will have earned a Bachelor’s degree in computer
Science or a related field from an accredited educational institution plus at
least 2 years of experience in any combination of the following: SQL/Shell
programming, Database Administration (Oracle, SQL Server). Additional relevant experience can be
substituted for education.
Experience in:
Database Administration in Oracle or SQL
Server, or Oracle-based ERP Administration.
Monitoring backup jobs and system alerts
and issue remediation.
Enterprise application and database
management.
Project management functions as a
project-team member.
Installation, configuration, upgrades,
patches of Oracle databases and Banner applications.
Understanding of application server technology such as Oracle WebLogic,
Fusion Middleware, or Apache Tomcat.
Preferred qualifications:
Computer Science, IT or related field.
Alternatively,
the successful candidate may possess any equivalent combination of experience
and training, which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities required to
perform the essential job functions. This includes, but is not limited to, the

Strong

outstanding written and verbal communication and technical writing skills.
Ability to

Ability to correlate fixes available in patches with
identified functional and technical issues. Work with Database Administrators
to plan for upgrades and patches.
Basic SQL skills and experience migrating database
objects. Basic Shell Scripting.
Ability to execute fundamental database administration
tasks to support the campus ERP and related technologies. Ability to
troubleshoot and support the campus ERP application with strong analytical
sense.
