Position Summary: The Lang Medical Scholars Program at Katz School of Medicine at Temple University is a six-year educational initiative that transforms a student’s early interest in science into a vision for a career in healthcare. Through hands-on learning and collaboration with healthcare professionals, students from 7th through 12th grade explore each system of the human body, learning how healthy systems function, how disease develops, and how prevention and treatment shape individual, public and global health. Along the way, they gain early exposure to health careers and discover the many ways they can contribute to healthier selves and healthier communities. The Teaching Assistant for the Lang Medical Scholars Program at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University supports the successful delivery of program sessions by assisting with instruction, student engagement, and classroom operations. This role helps ensure a structured, organized, and positive learning experience for middle school students participating in a hands-on health science program. This position is well-suited for college students, graduate students, and current or retired educators interested in education, health science or youth development who enjoy working directly with middle school students. Required Education and Experience: - Open to college students, recent college graduates, or early-career professionals, current and retired educators - Three years of relevant experience; can include internships, student leadership roles, volunteer work, or positions as a teacher, camp counselor or other instructor Required Skills and Abilities: - Experience working with elementary, middle or high school students (formal or informal; tutoring, mentoring, camp, or classroom support) - Strong communication and interpersonal skills - Ability to work effectively in a team environment - Dependable, punctual, and able to commit to the program schedule - Ability to engage students in an active, hands-on learning environment Preferred Skills and Abilities: - Background or coursework in health sciences, education, psychology, or a related field - Experience supporting classroom instruction or youth programs - Interest in healthcare, STEM education, or youth development - Current or prior teaching experience (including student teaching or retired educators[B) Essential Duties: Instructional Support & Student Engagement - Assist in delivering hands-on health science lessons under the direction of program leadership - Facilitate small-group activities and support student participation in experiments and projects - Provide academic support, encouragement, and redirection to students as needed - Help maintain a respectful, inclusive, and engaging learning environment Program Operations & Logistics - Assist in preparation, organization, and management of instructional materials and supplies - Assist with classroom set-up and breakdown before and after sessions - Support student supervision during sessions and transitions - Ensure adherence to program procedures, safety protocols, and expectations by students Collaboration & Communication - Work collaboratively with program staff to support session flow and student experience - Participate in training, planning meetings, and program check-ins as needed - Communicate clearly and professionally with staff and program participants - Performs other duties as assigned.
